- Q: Is it safe to drink tap water in Kyrgyzstan?
- A: Water that has been adequately chlorinated, by using minimum recommended water treatment standards, will afford substantial protection against viral and bacterial waterborne diseases. However, chlorine treatment alone, as used in the routine disinfection of water, might not kill some viruses and the parasitic organisms. In areas where chlorinated tap water is not available or where hygiene and sanitation are poor, then the following should be safe to drink: Beverages, such as tea and coffee, made with boiled water. Canned or bottled carbonated beverages, including carbonated bottled water and soft drinks. Beer and wine.
Tap water in Bishkek is, in our view, safe though some tour guides, erring in favor of caution, advise you to stick to bottled water, and you can freely buy cheap mineral waters if you wish. There are concerns about the quality of drinking water in some of the rural areas – especially in the south – and when in doubt you should drink bottled mineral water. This is generally available throughout the country – but local varieties may be an “acquired taste”.
